What is Networking and Types of Networks

Network:

Network is a Physical connection between two or more devices to establish communication. The connection may be Wireless or Wire connection.

Networking

Internet:

The internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world. Through the internet, people can share information and communicate from anywhere with an internet connection.

Internet connections between different countries are facilitated by undersea cables, which are responsible for moving data between countries and continents at high speeds. These cables make everything from photo sharing to financial transactions possible. They use fibre optics to transmit data at high speeds to land, which is then conveyed via fibre optics to homes and businesses.

Networking:

The communication process or sharing an information between two or more devices is known as Networking.

Types of Network:

  1. LAN (Local Area Network) – Upto 1km radius
  2. WAN (Wide Area Network) – No limits
  3. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) – Geographic Area
  4. WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) – Using wireless communication within a limited area
  5. CAN (Campus Area Network) – Within a Geographic Area multiple sites of some organization
  6. VPN (virtual Area Network) – Extends private network across public Network
  7. SAN (Storage Area Network) – High-speed network that connects shared pools end storage devices.

LAN (Local Area Network):

It is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a Residence, School, Lab, Campus, Office etc.

Advantages:

  • Resource Sharing
  • Software Sharing
  • Convenient communication
  • Centralized Data
  • Improved Security
  • Internet Sharing
  • Computer Identification

Disadvantages:

  • High Initialization Cost
  • Policy violation
  • Security
  • Maintenance
  • Area Coverage
  • Server crashes
  • Malware spreading

WAN (Wireless Area Network):

It is a Telecommunication network that extends over a large geographical area for the primary purpose of computer networking.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network):

It is a Network that is used to connect computers within a metropolitan area. which could be a single large city or multiple cities.

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network):

It is a wireless connection that connects two or more devices in a LAN. WLAN is used across points and routers to have connections between devices.

CAN (Campus Area Network):

It is a Network of multiple interconnected local area networks (CAN)  in a limited geographical area it is also known as a “Corporate Area Network”.

VPN (Virtual Public Network):

A VPN is to send data privately to the destination without being tampered with and to maintain the integrity of the data between the source and destination.

A VPN connection establishes a secure connection between you and the internet. Via the VPN, all your data traffic is routed through an encrypted tunnel (virtual). This disguises your IP address when you use file interned making its location invisible to everyone. It is also secure against external attacks.

SAN (Storage Area Network):

It is a dedicated, independent high-speed network that interconnects and devices shares pools of storage devices with multiple sources. Each server can access shared storage as if it were a drive directly attached to the server.
